Butter Side Up!

Ok so you’ve been dealt a pretty crap hand, it’s not fair, you don’t deserve it but what do you do? I suppose there are many ways to deal with the hard knocks, everyone is different thank goodness but until this ordeal is over every time I drop it my toast lands….

Everyone’s treatment plan is different, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy or surgery, individually or in any combination.

The range of Chemotherapy drugs is enormous, have a look at

http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Treatments/Chemotherapy/Individualdrugs

Whatever you’ve heard about it from friends and relations you’re advised to ignore it and listen to what the Oncologist says about you’re individual treatment.

Everyone knows that Chemotherapy makes you sick - right?
Well everyone knows going to the dentist isn’t pleasant so you never expect it to be - right?

All I’m trying to say is if you think it’ll make you sick then it probably will. Remember, Butter Side Up!

12 Feb 09 - Jane met me from work and we drove over to the City Hospital for a 1.30 appointment.

We met the Oncologist’s Registrar, Lucy. We had ample opportunity to ask questions and she described the possible side effects of the drugs and after another quick examination I signed the consent forms.

The next step is a ‘new patient’ appointment on 23 Feb 09 when I have to return the gallon container I was given full of a days worth of wee! The two foot tall carrier bag it came in suggests I have an alien disease, at least it’s plain on one side!

Basically and fortunately it’s text book treatment for me consisting of

Nine weeks of Chemotherapy starting on 03 Mar 09

Followed by surgery sometime in May 09

Followed by a further nine weeks of Chemotherapy

Then some recovery time and realistically it’ll be Christmas 09 before I’m fit again.

Text Box: Treatment Plan

The nine weeks of Chemotherapy is split into three week cycles. Day one is a 12 hour infusion in Hospital followed by two tablets a day for the next 20 days. Then back to Hospital for blood tests to see that liver and kidney functions are OK and that the blood cell counts are stable enough to start the next cycle, if not I’ll have to take a break while they recover. I want to avoid that

This is my individual drug combination for Chemotherapy:

On my consent form this was shortened to the abbreviation ECX

Epirubicin

Cisplatin

Capecitabine

After my stay in hospital ti have the NJ Tube fitted my consultant changed the Capecitabine to 5FU or Fluorouracil.

That means the combination changes from ECX to ECF

Details of those three drugs as a combination can be found here

http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Treatments/Chemotherapy/Combinationregimen/ECF

Text Box: Surgery - Oesophagectomy

Here are the before and after pictures, a bit dramatic I know. From a text book of course but shows the exact position of where my cancer is, quite common apparently.

There’s a description of the surgery from Homerton University Hospital
here.

Be warned though, start Googling it too much and you’ll scare yourself stupid. If you have to do it at least restrict your search to the UK to avoid all those American head cases.

Text Box: After a period of recovery its back to more of the same Chemotherapy but keep an eye on my Treatment Blog to see any variation from the plan.

You might see this little one pop up every now and then, she’s a 3 inch Steiff bear called Flo who has to accompany me on all my visits to Hospital.
